How can I get rid of Windows 98 and change my Windows XP user language interface?

My computer has 80 GB of hard disk. My friend partitioned it. There were Windows 98 on Drive C and Windows XP on Drive D (both OS are Chinese home edition).

    FYI, I am a beginner...

Recently I changed my mind and now I want to do 3 things:
    1. Get rid of Windows 98 (Chinese) from Drive C
    2. Get rid of Windows XP (Chinese) from Drive D
    3. Install Windows XP (English interface from Multilingual User Interface Pack) to Drive C

    What I did yesterday was:
    1. Formated both Drives C and D using a Windows 98 boot disk in MS-DOS environment
    2. Inserted the Multilingual User Interfact Pack hoping to install Windows XP (English interface) -> A message said that the setup.exe file could not be opened in the MS-DOS environment.
    3. Unexpectedly, I tried all that I could and ended up installing Windows 98 (Chinese) to Drive C, hoping that I could upgrade the Windows 98 (Chinese) to Windows XP (English). This did not work.
    4. I installed Windows XP (Chinese) to Drive D, hoping that I could install Windows XP (English) to replace Windows XP (Chinese). Again this did not work.

Something must be wrong because I ended up having to install Windows 98 on Drive C and Windows XP on Drive D (so it looks exactly the same as before despite all the hassles)... Could someone please advise what the correct steps are in order to do these? Should I turn my Drive D (currently with Windows XP Chinese) from NTFS to FAT32? If yes, how can I do so? Will I be able to autorun the MUI setup.exe file when I restart the computer by simply inserting the CD-ROM?

    1. Get rid of Windows 98 from Drive C
    2. Get rid of Windows XP from Drive D
    3. Install Windows XP (English interface) to Drive C

    Thank you for your time.

If your system will boot from CD then booting from the XP install CD should allow you to wipe out all that is there (including removal of both partitions), repartition if you wish, and load XP on C:\

    Newt, thanks for your reply.

I put the MUI CD and manually opened setup.exe on Drive C (in Windows 98 Chinese), but there was an error message which said that the setup.exe file was not a proper Win32 file. Another time the message was Kernel32 file was missing.

Then I tried to do the same on Drive D (in Windows XP Chinese), the setup.exe file was not autorun everytime I did it. Whether the file was opened manually or autorun, there was still an error message saying "Windows XP Multilingual User Interface Pack cannot be installed on this platform."

What else do you think I can do?

    Thank you again.

What you are trying to do is not possible. The Multilingual Interface Pack can only be installed on the English version of XP Pro - it cannot be installed on XP Home - see here ....
If you want to use the English version of XP you will need an English XP install CD.

    Thank you for the information.

Too bad... I got the wrong thing. :(

Will an English Windows XP setup.exe file be autorun in all OS, without any boot disk?

I found that the boot disk that I could make from my current Windows XP quite strange (my steps were Drive A > Format > Make a boot disk)... I mean, I do not see files such as fdisk.exe so I am not sure when the boot disk would be useful. When I used the Windows XP boot disk to boot my PC, it did not seem to work at all.

Yes - you need to do the following ....

Go into the BIOS and check that the boot order is set to CD-ROM > Floppy > HD.

Then insert the XP CD into your CD-ROM drive and reboot. The PC will then boot from the CD - follow the instructions outlined here

If you want to use Fdisk go to www.bootdisk.com and download a Win 98 boot disk - the file expands onto a floppy.

An added thought. XP/2K/NT do not use setup.exe to install. The proper file from DOS is winnt.exe which is found in the i386 folder.
